The questions behind Más allá del mapa

Published in 2026, Más allá del mapa brings personal journeys into conversation with anthropology, philosophy and the question of why people travel.

Finding a different voice

Miller said she spent two years writing Más allá del mapa. Rather than simply arranging destinations into a travel diary, she wanted personal stories to lead into wider questions. The anecdotes were chosen for the ideas they could help readers understand, giving abstract subjects a concrete setting.

She also wanted a different tone from her preceding essay: more evocative and less confrontational. In an April 2026 interview, she described the creative challenge as finding words that carried the feeling she intended. Publication was followed by a period devoted to introducing the book to readers.

Allowing room for uncertainty

A central subject is the desire to measure and organise experience. Miller contrasts habits of constant tracking with the possibility of not knowing exactly where a journey will lead. Her interest is in attention and openness, rather than treating every moment as something to optimise.

She does not present distant travel as the only way to find that openness. In her account, a change of perspective can happen in a familiar city too. She also describes travel as a privilege, and recognises that it can be difficult or frightening rather than automatically enriching.

Looking beyond the postcard

Her discussion of travel includes the risk of reducing another culture to an attractive image. She argues for interest in the meaning of customs, rather than only their appearance. The book’s questions therefore extend beyond where to go and towards how a visitor looks, listens and behaves.

Miller also connects this approach with the visibility of women in the history of exploration. She asks which travellers are remembered and whose names are overlooked. Her stated aim is to give readers material for forming their own judgments, leaving space for disagreement rather than offering a single correct way to travel.
